Plants, herbs, trees, compounds & their medicinal uses
The Plant Materia Medica is Ouma's garden gathered between the pages of a book.
Here we explore the herbs, flowers, trees and other plants that have been part of Southern Africa's healing traditions, kitchens and folkways—from their traditional uses and preparations to the stories, beliefs and cultural knowledge that have grown around them.
This collection will grow slowly over time, as new plants are researched, remembered and added to the Almanac.
The knowledge gathered here reflects traditional and folk practice and is shared for educational and cultural purposes. Traditional use does not necessarily mean a remedy is safe or medically effective. Where appropriate, we will include safety information and encourage you to seek qualified medical advice.
