Winter

Winter arrives quietly. The mornings are colder, the earth settles into stillness, and the long nights invite us to draw closer to the fire, the hearth and one another.

Beneath the southern sky, winter carries its own particular magic. The land may appear quieter, but there is life beneath the surface: seeds resting in the soil, roots gathering strength, animals adapting to the cold, and trees waiting patiently for the turning of the season.

This is the season of stillness, reflection and returning light. Around the winter solstice, we mark the turning point when the darkness has reached its deepest and the days begin, slowly, to lengthen again. Through our Urglaawe lens, we explore the traditions and observances surrounding this turning, while also listening to the seasonal lore of Southern Africa—the weather signs, plants, animals, stars and customs that belong to this time of year.

Winter asks us not only to celebrate, but to rest, remember, repair and prepare. It is a time for gathering around the hearth, tending the home, telling stories, preserving wisdom and dreaming quietly about what will emerge when spring returns.
