The Season of Harvest & Remembering

Autumn comes gently, almost unnoticed at first. The evenings grow cooler, the light softens, and the garden begins to give back what it has been growing all summer. Seeds are gathered, fruit ripens, leaves begin to fall, and the first hints of winter appear on the horizon.

This is the season of harvest and gratitude—of gathering in what has grown, preserving what can be kept, sharing what we have, and giving thanks for the abundance of the living earth. Across Southern Africa, autumn has its own signs and rhythms: changing weather, ripening fruits, migrating birds, drying grasses and the quiet preparation of the land for the colder months ahead.

Through our Urglaawe lens, we explore the celebrations and observances that accompany this turning of the Wheel, while also listening to the seasonal wisdom of Southern Africa: harvest traditions, foodways, seed-saving, weather lore, plants, animals, ancestors and the changing Southern sky.

Autumn also invites us to gather something less tangible—the stories, memories and lessons of the season that has passed. It is a beautiful time to preserve food, save seeds, make offerings of gratitude, tell old stories, honour those who came before us, and consider what we wish to carry with us into the winter.

Come sit at the harvest table. There is enough to share, and every season leaves something worth remembering.
